Hunter charged with manslaughter after baby he shot dies

SWAN LAKE – A Howard Beach man is in the Sullivan County Jail charged with manslaughter in the second degree in connection with the shooting death of a 16-month-old baby.
Edward Taibi. 45. had been hunting in Swan Lake when he fired a shot from his rifle.  The bullet went through the wall of a nearby trailer and hit the child, Charly Skala, of Woodbourne, who died of her injuries at Westchester Medical Center Sunday night.
Taibi had been hunting on property off Horseshoe Lake Road and fired his rifle, striking a deer. He then fired a second time from about 400 feet from the trailer.  The bullet entered the trailer and struck the victim in the upper torso.
After the baby was stabilized at Catskill Regional Medical Center, she was flown to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where she later died.
State Police BCI Lt. Pierce Gallagher said Taibi was extremely remorseful.
Gallagher said this tragedy points up the need for extreme caution and safety when hunting, and that starts with completion of a hunting safety course.
“There has to be a lot of safety exercised when you are hunting,” he said. “This was a fairly large caliber round with a lot of power to it so one of the first things about shooting any kind of firearm is knowing what’s behind your target and in this care, there wasn’t enough safety utilized and the results were tragic.”
The investigation is continuing by the State Police with the assistance of the State Environmental Conservation Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office.
