FDA Approves New Cholesterol Drug Vytorin

Miami, FL (AHN) – Federal regulators approved the use of a controversial drug to treat high cholesterol last week.
The Food and Drug Administration gave Vytorin the OK a year after a study came out suggesting it wasn’t any more effective than Zocor in lowering bad cholesterol.
Vytorin is a combination of simvastatin, the generic name for Zocor, and ezetimibe.

Man arrested after allegedly selling drugs to police at downtown

A San Luis Obispo man was arrested late Friday after police say he sold cocaine and Ecstacy to undercover officers at a downtown nightclub.
David Michael Lamberson, 36, was arrested about 11:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Higuera Street. Officers from the San Luis Obispo County Narcotics Task Force, who arrested Lamberson after a two-month investigation, said he had been selling the drugs at clubs in downtown San Luis Obispo.

FDA warnings for 30 diet drugs

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned people to avoid nearly 30 weight-loss products that contain unlisted and possibly dangerous ingredients.
They may promise an easy fix to weight problems, but the FDA said they contain unlisted ingredients, including high doses of a powerful anti-obesity drug, as well as a suspected carcinogen.

Wis. Supreme Court tosses suit against Medtronic

MADISON, Wis.
– Patients cannot sue the makers of potentially unsafe medical devices approved for sale by federal regulators, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.
The court ruled against a Wisconsin man who had surgery to remove a defibrillator after the manufacturer, Medtronic, Inc., warned its battery had a chance of failing. The ruling is a victory for Minneapolis-based Medtronic and other manufacturers who want to limit product liability.

Drugs valued at €212m seized by Garda last year

THE VALUE of illicit drugs seized by garda last year exceeded €200 million. The total value of main drug types seized last year was €212.3 million, compared with €167.5 million in 2007.
The seizures in both years are well ahead of trends in the previous five years, when drugs valued at between €80 million and just over €100 million were seized annually.

Girl in Fort Lewis incident is being released from hospital

A 16-year-old girl was being released from Madigan Army Medical Center today, after she was admitted early Sunday when she was found unconscious in a Fort Lewis barracks, a hospital spokesperson said this afternoon.
Another 16-year-old with her, Leah King, died Sunday in the case authorities say is drug-related.
