Nigeria’s President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua re-appeared in public for the first time Monday since his weekend return from a controversial trip to Saudi Arabia amid questions over his health.
Yar’Adua left for what was officially billed as a religious pilgrimage on August 20 only to end up in a Saudi hospital for an undisclosed ailment.
He came back on Saturday without the usual official reception formalities expected of heads of states at the airport.

An online personal health record system that allowed people with diabetes to check their lab results and get guidance about medication proved to be of only limited use in improving their health outcomes, researchers found.

HAYWARD — The downtown Hayward BART station is closed after two people were shot near the station’s entrance at about 12:40 p.m. today, authorities said. Both victims were transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
A teenager was shot in the abdomen and is in critical condition. The other victim — believed to be a bystander — was shot in the “lower left flank” and is expected to survive, said Hayward Fire Capt. Eric Vollmer.

LEBANON – The Lebanon Rescue Mission is hoping to have its
free medical clinic for the homeless open in January, the
mission’s director said.
That’s later than the fall timeline originally
planned, but formal agreements are being developed for the
operation of the medical clinic as a satellite of the Water
Street Medical-Dental Clinic in Lancaster, said the Rev.
Chris Smith, director of Lebanon Rescue Mission.

MONDAY, Oct. 6 (HealthDay News) — Simple changes to hospital procedures can significantly reduce the side effects children suffer while on opiates to relieve pain, a new study reveals.
The study, a yearlong collaboration between 14 U.S. children’s hospitals, documented a 67 percent decrease in “harmful events” caused by the pain relievers under these new procedures.
