TRENTON, N.J. – A new chief executive has been named to
oversee one of
’s most problematic public psychiatric
hospitals.
State Human Services Commissioner Jennifer Velez announced
Friday that Allan Boyer will take over Ancora Psychiatric Hospital
in late October.
One of Boyer’s first tasks will be to cooperate with a U.S.
Justice Department investigation into whether the civil rights of

Nigerian health officials say at least 14 more children have died after taking a teething mixture discovered to contain a harmful substance. Gilbert da Costa in Abuja has this report for VOA.

CLINTON, Iowa – State officials say they are taking a rare
action and asking federal officials to fine a Clinton hospital
$10,000 for allegedly contributing to the death of a nursing home
patient.
According to a copyright story in Monday’s The Des Moines
Register, state officials cannot fine a hospital for providing poor
quality care. However, they can recommend that the federal Centers

The FDA was urged by a scientific panel to rethink a recent conclusion that a chemical used in baby bottles and infant formula packing is safe at current levels. The science board agreed with the finding that that the FDA was wrong to base its August decision that BPA is safe only on studies funded by the chemical industry.

LONDON – A purple tomato genetically engineered to contain nutrients more commonly seen in dark berries helped prevent cancer in mice, British researchers said on Sunday.
The finding, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, bolsters the idea that plants can be genetically modified to make people healthier.
