Promising new diabetes drug Byetta has downside

People often feel some nausea and jitteriness when they start the drug. Occasionally, they get headaches. Most of these symptoms get better with time. Rare side effects include allergic reactions, severely low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and acute pancreatitis.

Sorting through the studies: breast cancer and diet

Medicine is increasingly looking at dietary changes as a way to reduce cancer tumours. In a current issue of Nutrition and Cancer, for example, it’s reported that walnut consumption suppressed tumour growth in animals compared to those following a typical American diet.
Researchers found that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids had an effect on cancer growth, as tumours took twice as long to double in size as tumours in the control group.

Iowa health officials report third case of E. coli

BURLINGTON, Iowa – Southeast
health officials have
confirmed a third case of a virulent type of E. coli in the region.
The latest case involving the bacteria was confirmed Monday by
the Des Moines County Health Department. In Lee County last week,
health officials confirmed two cases.
The Iowa Department of Public Health says it has not determined
the source of the illnesses.

FDA Defends Plastic Linked To Health Risks

Where is BPA found?
The National Toxicology Program says the main source of human exposure to bisphenol A, or BPA, is the tiny amounts that leach from Nalgene-type polycarbonate water bottles and from metal cans — that could include canned vegetables and fruits — lined with an epoxy resin that contains BPA. The chemical is also found in baby bottles, tableware and food storage containers.
