Democrats in Congress have vowed to push harder to ban bisphenol A in the wake of a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report last week showing that packages labeled “microwave safe” leached high amounts of the chemical when heated. A prominent former FDA commissioner, meanwhile, told The Wall Street Journal’s Health Blog that the agency’s guidance is needed because there is a void, and government officials, rather than newspapers should be finding the answers.

has risen from a net loss for the third quarter of last year to post earnings of $104 million, or 22 cents per share, for the third quarter of 2008. That is up from a net loss of $59 million, or 12 cents per share, during the same quarter last year.

Some skeptics of the hospitals dedication to enhancing patient care said Wednesday they are hopeful after hearing a presentation from the company that manages the facility.
