Seniors have until Dec. 31 to sign up for health care program

Call it a New Year’s resolution for keeping health care costs low.
The nearly 1.3 million North Carolina seniors eligible for Medicare government health insurance have until Dec. 31 to select their 2009 Medicare plan. The annual election period expires after the clock strikes midnight.

Indiana Boy Abandoned At Omaha Hospital

OMAHA, Neb. –
An Indiana boy became the 28th child abandoned at an Omaha hospital since the state’s Safe Haven law took effect in July.
According to Todd Landry with the Department of Health and Human Services, the 8-year-old boy’s mother dropped him off at Bergan Mercy Hospital on Thursday morning.
The department is in the process of gathering additional information.

Dyax drug candidate gets FDA priority review

NEW YORK (Associated Press) – Dyax Corp. said Friday the Food and Drug Administration is giving priority review to the biotechnology company’s developing treatment for a genetic condition that can lead to dangerous swelling.
The agency will aim to review the application for the drug within six months. An action date is set for March 23.

Shot man recovering in hospital

A man has been shot in the leg in an attack in Greater Manchester, police have said.
Officers were called to reports of the shooting in Pendleton, Salford, on Saturday evening.
They arrived at the scene on Amersham Street and discovered that a 39-year-old man had been shot.
The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Flu shot half dose just as good for younger adults

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A half dose of flu vaccine may work just as well as the full dose for healthy adults under 50 — a finding that could help stretch supplies in the event of a future vaccine shortage, researchers said on Monday.
The study involved about 1,100 U.S. adults, about half of whom were given a half dose of influenza vaccine in November and December 2004 and the rest were given a full dose.

Dad mistakenly shoots son on Calif. hunting trip

MINERAL, Calif.—A Marysville teenager was shot in the hip by his father during a weekend hunting accident in Northern California.
Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker says 16-year-old Justin McFarlane was hunting with his father on Sunday at Morgan Summit in Mineral, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.
The father, 50-year-old Daniel McFarlane, was unloading a rifle when it fired. His son was sitting in the pickup truck when he was struck.

Health Club schedules Kids Fitness Class

MARION – The Marion Racquet and Health Club has scheduled a Kids Fitness Class for youths ages six and older.
The class is designed to teach youths to be more aggressive athletically and to improve their hand-eye coordination. It will begin on Saturday, Nov. 15, and will be held from 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturdays for six weeks.
