Providence workers issued vaccine ultimatum

Many of us debate whether to get flu vaccines every year, but at Providence Alaska Medical Center, workers have no choice: The hospital is requiring all employees to get flu shots by year’s end or face dismissal.
Its new policy is cutting edge — and controversial, especially among nurses.
Infectious disease experts say the measure makes good health sense. It is intended to protect patients, already ill, from being infected with potentially deadly Read the rest of this entry »

Health Care and the New Administration

As discussed in your Jan. 9 editorial “Cuddly Welcome for Mr. Daschle,” the recent Senate confirmation hearing for our next secretary of health and human services was full of good feelings, but fixing our dysfunctional health care system will take courage and willingness to lead fundamental change.

Needed: Doctors who focus on teen medical problems

In some families, it’s as straightforward as a 13-year-old declaring him or herself too old to continue seeing a “baby doctor.”
For others, the reality of a sexually transmitted disease or a substance abuse problem makes it apparent that a teen suddenly requires services that are, at best, awkward to obtain from a practice with coloring books and toy boxes in the waiting room.
But even if parents and teen patients agree that a new doctor is needed, Read the rest of this entry »

Medical options linked to more debt

Buy now, pay later — a sales approach associated with fridges and backyard Jacuzzis — is increasingly an option for financing elective medical procedures.
Fertility treatments, cosmetic surgery, veterinary care and orthodontia can be approved on credit within minutes, as more medical practices team up with financing companies like GE CareCredit, CapitalOne HealthAdvance and M-Lend.
But experts warn that in a turbulent economic climate, consumers Read the rest of this entry »
