WASHINGTON (AP) — Few governors know the pitfalls of soaring health costs better than Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, which helps explain why President Barack Obama is reportedly considering the Democrat for health secretary.

Woman badly burned in UCLA chemical fire dies

LOS ANGELES — A school spokesman says a 22-year-old research assistant severely burned in a chemical fire at a science classroom at the University of California, Los Angeles last month has died.
Spokesman Phil Hampton says the woman died Friday at Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, where she was transferred after getting initial treatment at UCLA Medical Center.

Children's Hospital plans $1 million raffle

Phoenix Children’s Hospital has decided that the best way raise money and awareness of the work done there is to hold a raffle that will hand out big-screen TVs, fancy cars and possibly millions in cash.
The hospital is billing the fundraiser as “the raffle with a heart.” Various drawings will take place during the next few months, with the first occurring in December.

Salmonella outbreak hits here

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Tennessee is one of 42 states that has experienced an outbreak of salmonella, but the cause is unknown, state health officials said.
Officials have identified nine salmonella cases in Tennessee that are connected with the nationwide outbreak. Two of those occurred in the Chattanooga-Hamilton County region, the only one out of the state’s 13 regions that had more than one case, said Andrea Turner, state health department spokeswoman.
