MANCHESTER, Conn. – Manchester Memorial Hospital has agreed
to pay about $712,000 to resolve the federal government’s
allegations that it violated the False Claims Act.
The U.S. attorney’s office in
says the allegations
involved the hospital improperly billing Medicare for infusion
therapy and chemotherapy administration services from 2000 to 2004.

GALESBURG, Ill. — Defense attorneys representing a man charged with killing eight people in Illinois and Missouri last summer say an evaluation of his mental fitness will not be ready for a month.
At a hearing in Galesburg, attorney Jeremy Karlin said a doctor has only recently been appointed to evaluate Nicholas Sheley’s (SHEE’-leez) competency. The report was initially due next week.

CITY — Construction crews poured 200 cubic yards of concrete Tuesday for
the initial base of Bay
Medical Center’s
$60 million expansion project. The 20 cement trucks rolling on and off of the
construction site served as a milestone for the hospital and a reminder of the
jobs created.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro is offering veterans free testing and additional medical care after using potentially contaminated equipment during colonoscopies.
Hospital spokesman Chris Conklin says tools used to perform colonoscopies at its Lebanon Pike location may have been infected.
He says the hospital is using its electronic medical record system to identify patients who may be affected.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The University of Southern Maine says it will close its Lifeline community fitness program, citing the slumping economy and the school’s need for budget cuts.
The Lifeline Center for Wellness and Health Promotion opened 33 years ago. It now serves more than 500 individuals and offers workplace wellness services to some 75 employers in the region.

The pilot and passenger of a Piper Cherokee that crashed while approaching Monterey Peninsula Airport on Tuesday have been identified as Carmel Valley attorney Alexander “Zan” Henson and Santa Cruz attorney Jim Rummins.
