100 Davis Families Going On Carbon Diet

Over the next month, 100 families in Davis are going on a group diet. They are not cutting calories, but are looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
Their goal is for each family to adjust their lives enough to conserve the equivalent of 5,000 pounds of carbon emissions. The families are replacing lightbulbs, insulating homes and biking to work to produce less greenhouse gases.

Health Buzz: Alcohol Use and Cancer Risk and Other Health News

. The study involved more than 1.2 million British women, making it the largest study ever to look into the role of alcohol use in women’s cancer risk. During the seven-year follow-up period, 68,775 women in the study were diagnosed with cancer. Groups sue government over abortion rule

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Two abortion rights groups filed a lawsuit on Thursday against the U.S. government, asking a federal court to invalidate a rule the Bush administration says protects health care workers who do not believe in abortion.
Attorneys general of Connecticut, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Rhode Island filed a similar challenge to the Department of Health and Human Services rule.

Ex-Galesburg officer gets jail time for stealing drugs

A former Galesburg Police Department lieutenant will spend the next 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to stealing drugs from the department’s evidence locker.
David W. Hendricks, 50, pleaded guilty Oct. 2 to one count of possession of a controlled substance and official misconduct.

Officials seek help for Pontiac's North Oakland hospital

Local School Holds Event To Battle Cancer

One of the premiere national high school tournaments of the season took place in the Valley Saturday and the whole thing stood to benefit a great cause.
Organizers held the the Cancer Research Classic at Wheeling Jesuit University and 10 basketball teams participated.
