The World Health Organization says it hopes to have a surveillance
system in place soon that can accurately track cholera cases as they
occur in Zimbabwe. WHO says it is difficult to know which parts of the
country most need help in treating and containing the epidemic without
accurate monitoring.
The United Nations reports cholera in
Zimbabwe has claimed more than 1,100 lives and more than 20,000, people
have become infected with this deadly disease.

CARSON CITY, Nev.—The state Board of Medical Examiners will ask the 2009 Nevada Legislature to approve a measure to increase transparency and efficiency, and let patients participate when errant doctors are disciplined.
The plan would let patients or others who file complaints against physicians voice their concerns before a hearing officer or when discipline is imposed by the board. That’s not allowed under current law.

A Volusia County man is recovering after jumping from the second floor of Halifax Health Center Saturday.
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the man, 37, was initially taken to the hospital by his brother for a psychiatric evaluation.
As the man came in the front entrance, he broke away and ran up a set of stairs, to the top of an administrative wing.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University is giving students a $30 million reason to avoid packing on the freshman 15.
The school is constructing a new campus recreation center featuring an Olympic-sized pool, four full-sized gymnasiums and a walking/jogging track.
The center also contains a variety of exercise equipment, including treadmills, weight machines and step machines.

Pfizer Inc.’s
(PFE) proposed osteoporosis drug
before issuing a final decision, the company said Tuesday.
The extension will allow the FDA to review data on Fablyn, a drug proposed to
treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, from a five-year study.
The agency was originally supposed to make a decision on whether to approve
Fablyn by the end of October. The extension means a decision won’t come until
January, a Pfizer spokeswoman said Tuesday.
