Mediterranean diet plan doubles women’s fruit, veggie intake

For women, switching over to the traditional Mediterranean diet, can almost double their fruit and vegetable intakes and dramatically increase their consumption of “good” fats, according to a new study.
During the study, 69 women were divided into two groups. In one group, registered dieticians used an “exchange list” of foods that are common in a Mediterranean diet to make a plan for each participant.

Renown closes fitness center to expand cancer center

Officials at Renown Health confirmed Monday they will soon shut down the medical center’s fitness center in order to expand cancer treatment services.
The center, which contains cardiovascular and other fitness equipment, will be closed Dec. 31, said Don Butterfield, director of communications for Renown.

Funding crunch puts rural EMS in tight spot

Shrinking call volumes and growing payment delinquencies are driving some emergency medical services to scale back ambulance service in some East Texas counties.
Victor Wells, executive director of Champion EMS, said delinquent payments are a national problem. “Many people believe it’s a free service,” Wells said. “but it’s not, and at times we have to bear the costs.”
