Study: High co-pays, annual caps risk cancer patients

One in three insured people with cancer encounter serious financial hardships, or even forced to forgo care, because their health insurance does not fully pay for their treatments, says a report released today.
The report, from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the American Cancer Society, details the problems of the underinsured — some 43 million Americans with health coverage that doesn’t go far enough to pay medical bills.

Leisure Fitness stores get back on track

Some Leisure Fitness stores will reopen by the end of this month after a Wilmington investor group purchased the company in bankruptcy court.
Between eight and 11 of the company’s 19 stores are expected to reopen, said Paul Bastianelli, the company’s new CEO. The Newark store reopened on Thursday, and the Bear closeout store has been open for several weeks, he said.

“We think we are giving good care as we serve all 21 of our [assisted-living] facilities in the Twin Cities, plus maybe 150 people in the community,” she said. “But most of our scores don’t reflect that, and we don’t know why.”

Health chiefs battle to bring back Iraqi doctors

BAGHDAD (AP) — A kidney specialist who fled Iraq’s bombings, kidnappings and sectarian killings 20 months ago has reported back to work at his Baghdad hospital — one of some 800 doctors who have returned over the summer.
Doctors are just a tiny group among Iraq’s more than 4 million refugees and displaced, but Iraq’s health minister says their homecoming sends a message to other emigres that security has “improved dramatically.”

Diet drug blamed for psychosis in man who killed officer

Superior Court Judge Alfred Dempsey sentenced a cop-killer to life in prison without parole Monday, saying the defendant’s psychiatric evaluations made seeking the death penalty unnecessary.

Husband crashes on way to hospital; wife dies
