Dr. Todd Mitchell was awakened by a phone call at 8 a.m. on the Tuesday after Christmas.

– Six people, including a toddler, died when fire destroyed a three-story home in southwest Philadelphia Friday night, fire officials said.
All six victims were found in the townhome’s basement of the townhome, huddled together against the only exit door, Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said.
The one-year-old was taken to Children’s Hospital where the toddler was pronounced dead, an official said.

Penn State University’s medical center is delaying construction of a new children’s hospital in
because of concerns over the global economic crisis.

NEW YORK – Cynthia Casey’s husband was in the hospital with a failing liver when she was laid off in September, stranding the family without health insurance.
Medical bills were piling up. She had two teenagers to feed and a weekly unemployment check of less than $300.
“The bills just were not getting paid,” said Casey, a 50-year-old resident of Pompano Beach, Fla., who until recently worked as an accounts payable supervisor.

The FDA has localized the source of the recent Salmonella outbreak. The funky peanut butter and peanut butter paste came from the Peanut Corporation of America processing plant in Blakely, Georgia. This company distributed their contaminated peanut products to 70 other companies who put them into hundreds of different products, including cookies, crackers, candy, cereal and ice cream.
