Late yesterday, the city’s physician recruiter, Jeff Gouveia, announced that six new family doctors will be added to the Kingston Family Health Team by the new year.
All six were recruited under a new incentive program approved earlier this year by city council.
“We’re announcing these six [doctors] now and the goal for the year is 10,” he told the Whig-Standard.
“I’m quite certain we’re going to meet that,” Gouveia said.

Hospital heals double-billing problem

On March 3, 2007, my son had routine lab work done at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso, Ind. He was on a medication that required he have lab work done every six to eight weeks.
The bill was $632.88. Of this, $75.94 was deducted as the negotiated discount for using a preferred provider.
On March 13, 2007, our insurance paid $445.55 — leaving a balance due of $111.39, which we paid. I must admit I don’t remember if I paid by credit card or check.

Barry to Be Released in Plenty of Time for Court Date

WASHINGTON — Councilman Marion Barry has been ordered to appear in court April 2 on his repeated delinquency filing his income taxes.
Barry is at Howard University Hospital recovering from Friday’s kidney transplant. After federal prosecutors asked a judge to put Barry in jail for failure to file his 2007 taxes on time, the former mayor said his medical condition distracted him from his taxpayer duties.

HRT Drugs Shrink Women's Brains

has found that HRT drugs literally shrink women’s brains. Subjects who took HRT drugs for an extended period of time showed a loss of 2.37 cubic centimeters in the frontal lobe of the brain.
The frontal lobe is responsible for memory and thinking skills. These study findings may explain why women who use HRT drugs are increasingly being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The Department of Health confirmed yesterday that potentially toxic milk powder imported from China’s Sanlu Group has been sold to 10 distributors in nine cities and counties in Taiwan. There are fears that some of the milk powder may have found its way into processed or packaged foods such as coffee beverages.

Diet High in Calcium Reduces Risk of Colon Cancer

Washington (HealthKnowItAll) – Results of a new study suggest that calcium may ward off colon cancer.
Calcium has long been thought of as a mineral that offers numerous health benefits, mainly strengthening our bones.

Colombia drugs lord shot dead in Madrid hospital

One of Colombia's most notorious drug lords, Leonidas Vargas, was shot dead in his Madrid hospital bed on Thursday, Spanish policesaid.
At least one person entered the room in Madrid's October 12th Hospital where Vargas was being treated for a serious illness, and shot the drugs kingpin four times just before 8 p.m. local time, policesaid.

John R. Ottina, 76, the 20th U.S. commissioner of education and assistant secretary of administration and management in the former Department of Health, Education and Welfare, died Sept. 30 of pancreatic cancer at his home in Marshall, Va.

Rwanda: Trio Pass Fifa Fitness Test

Kigali — Three Caf/Fifa referees called for African Youth Championship passed a Fifa Fitness test held yesterday at Amahoro stadium.
The trio includes Rwanda’s assistant referee Felicien Kabanda, Hussein Bugembe (Uganda) and centre referee Alfred Ndinya (Kenya).
The trio was summoned late last week after three of the initially 18 referees selected by Confederation of African Football failed to pass the Fifa Fitness test held last week.
