Family may protect immigrants' mental health: study

LONDON (Reuters) – Immigrants to Britain are more likely to suffer serious mental health problems than the native population, but strong family and community ties may help to protect them, researchers said on Monday.
Previous studies have shown a higher risk of psychoses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder among immigrants facing discrimination and alienation, but the new findings pointed to surprising variations among different ethnic communities.

Somerset Medical Center honors two newest 20-gallon blood donors

Somerset Medical Center recently honored its two newest 20-gallon blood donors: State Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman and Ted Legacki of Middlesex Borough. They are among only four individuals to reach that milestone in the history of the medical center’s Blood Donor Program.
Both men began donating blood at Somerset Medical Center in 1980. Legacki achieved the 20-gallon mark in October. Bateman reached 20 gallons in December.

Man charged with posing as a medical doctor

ELGIN — An Elgin man was arrested for the second time in the last five years Thursday after he was caught posing as a medical doctor, police said.
Manuel Caravantes, 47, 1262 Getzelman Drive, Unit 1B, was charged with practicing medicine without a license, a Class 3 felony.

Police: Physician slain in murder-suicide in Vegas

LAS VEGAS—Police say a physician was shot dead and the patient who shot her died after turning the gun on himself.
Police Lt. Lewis Roberts says it’s not immediately clear why 80-year-old Eliseo Santos shot Dr. Edna Almaden Makabenta a little before 9:30 a.m. Monday at her office and then shot himself.
Santos died a short time later at nearby University Medical Center.

Seattle names Tenney fitness coach
