Lowly worm offers new clues on stroke, heart drugs

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Worms that can survive with almost no oxygen are teaching scientists how to rescue oxygen-starved cells in humans who suffer a heart attack or stroke, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
They identified a gene that can help a cell slow down when oxygen levels get too low, protecting the cells from making fatal mistakes while starved of oxygen.

Wisconsin Badgers' Kyle Jefferson out of hospital after concussion

was released from a Madison, Wis., hospital Sunday after sustaining a concussion in the Badgers game against Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
Jefferson took a blow to the head in the second quarter of Wisconsin’s 35-32 win and lay motionless on the turf for several minutes. Head coach Bret Bielema said Jefferson was knocked unconscious but had motion in his extremities.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Health care and emergency services workers who might help sick people during an influenza pandemic should take antiviral drugs throughout the epidemic, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in new guidance released on Tuesday.
