The city of Alameda has issued an order revoking the Purple Elephant medical marijuana dispensary’s business license. But the dispensary has appealed the decision and remains open.
A date for the appeal, which will be heard by the city manager, the mayor and the city’s finance director, has not yet been set. If the dispensary’s owner were to lose that appeal, he could appeal directly to the City Council.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of inVentiv Health Inc., which provides services for the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries, surged Thursday after the company topped Wall Street’s third-quarter profit forecasts.

A motorcyclist died at the hospital today after a crash in unincorporated Solano County on Interstate Highway 80 near Vallejo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver either ran into the center divide or collided with another vehicle around 5:30 p.m. just west of American Canyon Road on the eastbound side of the highway, according to the CHP.
He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ike-damaged hospital, med school laying off 3,800
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, a teaching hospital severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, will lay off about 3,800 workers — nearly a third of its work force — because it is running out of money.
