VA medical center reaches out to homeless

Washington DC VA Medical Center officials say they are planning for as many as 800 homeless veterans Saturday at their annual medical-screenings and employment-services event.
Officials said 381 homeless veterans had registered by Thursday, compared with 200 at this time last year. They also said 11 female homeless veterans were among those registered and that only one attended the 2008 event.

San Mateo County hospital left catheter in heart, suit says

Doctors at the San Mateo Medical Center left a five-inch catheter inside a Foster City man’s heart, causing an infection that complicated his fight against cancer, then tried to cover up the mistake, according to a lawsuit filed this week.
Alan Paolucci, 52, says the San Mateo County-run hospital should have known that a catheter being used to treat his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma had broken off from a port in his chest after he began treatment in 2003.

Dendreon shares fall back after prior day's rise

Shares of Dendreon Corp. tumbled Tuesday as investors backed off the prior day’s big gains on data showing that a developing prostate cancer vaccine could meet its goal in a late-stage study.

Nebraska discusses safe haven law

The age limit for abandoning children in the US state of Nebraska could be cut from 18 years to three days, if politicians vote on the change.
Under a safe haven law passed in July, a person will not be prosecuted for leaving a child at a hospital.
Since then at least 33 children have been legally abandoned – but 20 of them are teenagers, prompting a rethink on the law’s wording.

FDA testing S&P cookies for melamine

BANGKOK, Oct 13 (TNA) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected S&P cookie samples and the product’s seven ingredients to test for melamine after Switzerland said it found Thai-produced S&P cookies were contaminated with melamine.

Physical Fitness Test shows California students improved slightly
