U.K. police say men wove drugs into Afghan rugs
LONDON — Two men in Britain have been convicted of smuggling heroin by hiding it in the fabric of carpets imported from Pakistan.
British police say Abdul Khaliq, 45, and Yadegar Nazari, 40, were found guilty in September of importing 27 kilograms of high-grade heroin.
On Monday, Khaliq was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Nazari was jailed for 16 years.

Bartow police officer fires at theft, pursuit suspect

The shooting, the first involving a Bartow police officer since 1991, resulted in only minor injuries to the suspect.
According to police, officers were dispatched around 12:42 a.m. to an auto theft in progress at 2405 State Road 60 E. While en route, the officers were told that one or more suspects were driving a dark-colored pickup truck and that a motorcycle had been stolen and placed in the bed of the truck.

Colombia drugs lord shot dead in Madrid hospital

One of Colombia's most notorious drug lords, Leonidas Vargas, was shot dead in his Madrid hospital bed on Thursday, Spanish policesaid.
At least one person entered the room in Madrid's October 12th Hospital where Vargas was being treated for a serious illness, and shot the drugs kingpin four times just before 8 p.m. local time, policesaid.

FDA Calls Diet Coke Plus 'Misbranded'

Dec. 23, 2008 — In a warning letter to Coca-Cola, the FDA says that Diet
Coke Plus is “misbranded.”
The FDA says that Diet Coke Plus doesn’t meet the FDA’s nutritional
standards for the term “plus.” The FDA also states that it “does
not consider it appropriate to fortify snack foods such as carbonated
beverages.” The letter, dated Dec. 10, 2008, is posted on the FDA’s web
site.
