BIRMINGHAM –Physicians Medical Center Carraway filed for federal bankruptcy protection for the second time in two years Monday and planned to shut down by the end of October.
The century-old hospital, which was purchased by a group of doctors after it filed a bankruptcy petition in 2006, had only 100 or so patients but still employs about 1,000 people. Located near downtown Birmingham, Carraway is licensed for 617 beds.
