I-580 freeway shooting injures driver, sheriff's deputy

A driver who had been traveling on Interstate 580 near Castro Valley and an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy who had been standing near an adjacent street underwent surgery early Saturday morning after both were struck by bullets fired from another car driving on the freeway.

Aso to vow '11 sales tax hike in Diet speech

Prime Minister Taro Aso is expected to use his policy speech at the Diet to reiterate his determination to raise the consumption tax in fiscal 2011 on the assumption the economic crisis will have improved by then.
