Deadly illness in SAfrica linked to Lassa fever: report

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — The cause of a viral haemorrhagic fever which recently killed three people in Johannesburg may be related to the Lassa fever virus of West Africa, health officials said Sunday.
The fever has provisionally been identified as an arenavirus, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the Department of Health said, according to South Africa’s SAPA news agency.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.  —  A 9-year-old girl has died and a second child was hospitalized after falling into an icy suburban Chicago pond.
Naperville fire officials say three cousins between 8 and 10 years old were playing on the frozen pond at a subdivision Thursday afternoon when the ice gave way, sending a boy and girl into the water. The third child ran for help.
