WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice makes her first solo visit to Mexico this week for talks on U.S. help in Mexico’s battle against drug gangs as well as other issues, the State Department said on Tuesday.
Rice plans to meet Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa and other officials Wednesday and Thursday in the Pacific tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The governor of Kandahar province lit a huge bonfire Saturday with drugs that Afghan police have seized in the past three years.
Ramatullah Raufi set the drugs on fire in an open field.
He says the drugs have burned his country and that’s why he torched them.
The drugs, which included 114 kilograms of heroin, one tonne of poppies and 10 tonnes of hashish, were seized around Kandahar city.

A former soldier from Glasgow who was jailed for six-and-a-half years over a plot to sell Army explosives is facing more prison time over drugs charges.
Police found more than 1,500 rounds of ammunition and 2kg of heroin when they raided Andrew Quinn’s flat in Dennistoun last December.
The 26-year-old was later jailed with three others over the munitions plot.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Denny Hamlin was taken to a Birmingham hospital Sunday after a tire failure led to a hard crash at Talladega Superspeedway.
NASCAR said Hamlin was alert and awake, but was transported for futher observation. Hamlin was complaining of a headache and was favoring his right foot after his slow exit from his crumpled car.
