Fitness pioneer pumped about his career

CARLSBAD

Back in the early 1960s, astronauts underwent rigorous physicals to qualify for the space program, so they did what they could to stay in shape.
“We found this little health spa in downtown Houston called the President's Club,” said James Lovell of Apollo 13 fame.
Lovell said all of the first astronauts trained there, including Alan Shepard, John Glen, Scott Carpenter and Virgil “Gus” Grissom. “We Read the rest of this entry »

Life in a year, Part 1 of 12: Los Gatos couple experiences

Wendy Riggs was having a baby.
That was all she knew. That was all she cared about. But as people swarmed in and out of the small surgical tent that had been built around her swollen belly, she was strapped to the hospital operating table by her arms and ankles, unable to move, unable to see, unable to feel anything from the neck down.
She was 42 and her life was set: a happy marriage, two sons, a comfortable home. And now, because she and her Read the rest of this entry »

FDA objects to Diet Coke Plus nutritional claims

Calls to the Atlanta company were not immediately returned.
Food inflation in 2009 may fall to 4.5% amid lower dairy costs, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
The forecast for inflation, estimated at as high as 6% this year, is falling as commodity prices drop, the USDA said in a monthly report. Crude oil has plunged 73% from its July peak of $147.27 a barrel. Corn, wheat and soybeans are all at least 46% below their all-time highs.

The availability of unapproved prescription drugs to the public may create a dangerous false sense of security. Dozens Read the rest of this entry »

Lighten up: There's a workout regimen for every fitness level

I had no patience for low-impact anything until a complicated operation last May involved the breaking of my foot. The doctor told me I should not dance, run or jump for a year. “No impact,” he insisted, and advised me to ride a recumbent bike instead.
I tried the bike to nowhere. It was boring.
A Jazzercise flier announcing, “Lite” classes caught my eye. Could this rehabilitating baby boomer get a more kinetic workout without pounding the feet?
