LAS VEGAS—Federal officials are granting a reprieve allowing the only hospital kidney transplant program in Nevada to remain open at least until June.
The Las Vegas Sun reported Wednesday that University Medical Center in Las Vegas won praise for addressing a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services report that found high death rates for transplant recipients.
The program, which has about 200 people awaiting kidney transplants, was facing Read the rest of this entry »

What’s a health care/social services-focused legislator such as Sara Feigenholtz to do when a Democratic president takes office promising to reform the health care system?
Run for Congress to help.
Perhaps it was the night the man came to her family’s house saying his daughter was sick and Feigenholtz’s mother said, “bring her in,” cleared off her kitchen table and examined the girl right there in the kitchen. Feigenholtz has been fixated on Read the rest of this entry »

MONDAY, Feb. 2 (HealthDay News) — Education does not slow the rate of cognitive decline among the elderly, new research shows.
The finding contradicts several earlier studies that suggested more education lowered the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
“Your rate of cognitive decline really doesn’t depend on the number of years of schooling you’ve had,” said study author Robert S. Wilson, a professor of neuropsychology at Rush Alzheimer’s Read the rest of this entry »

My mom hates exercise. Not just dislikes it, but avoids it as actively as someone who attempts to be as inactive as possible can. So I was floored last week when the words “I’m sweating” — as a result of actual muscle use — came out of her mouth. Did I mention she was smiling?
Nope, I wasn’t dreaming. I was in the Chevy Chase Ballroom, a District of Columbia dance studio where she had dragged Read the rest of this entry »

My company has been laying off people, and I’m worried that I may lose my job soon. If that happens, what will I be able to do about my health insurance?
If you lose or leave your job, you usually can continue coverage through your employer’s plan for up to 18 months through a federal program called COBRA. You can’t be rejected or charged more because of your health, but you may be flabbergasted by the price.
Your policy doesn’t change when you Read the rest of this entry »

HAMILTON, Ontario, Jan. 21 — Gym class and other school fitness initiatives should be pursued even if their benefits don’t include weight loss, according to a systematic review.

Scientists have halted the advance of heart disease in mice – and even reversed some of its effects.
The study provides hard evidence that tiny pieces of genetic material called microRNA can play a key role in the development of heart disease.
The therapy, featured in the journal Nature, targets and blocks microRNA in heart cells.
A US specialist said that, with trials under way in other animals, human tests may be only a few years away.
