TAMPA – More than 1,000 Tampa Bay area elementary school children got a lesson Wednesday in the importance of exercise from about a dozen current and retired
players and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
The youngsters, who spent the day on the NFL Experience grounds outside Raymond James Stadium, had entered an NFL Play 60 program to learn fitness principles. The event was part of NFL Kids’ Day.

Man released from hospital after stabbing on Manfre Road

FREEDOM – A Watsonville man in his 40s was stabbed three times early today while leaving a holiday party on Manfre Road, according to authorities.
The man was about to be picked up by a friend outside the house just after midnight when he was jumped by four or five Latino males, Sheriff’s Sgt. Christine Swannack said. Two sent to hospital after cable car and SUV collide near

A man who was standing on running board of the crowded cable car and the driver of the Honda sport utility vehicle were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Police are investigating the cause of the collision, said Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Judson True.
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Hyde Street between Beach Street and North Point near Ghirardelli Square.

Officials: Day care where boy drowned was licensed

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Officials say a North Las Vegas day care that was closed after a toddler drowned this week was licensed and passed a July inspection.
The 18-month-old boy who died was identified as Jordan Williams. Investigators say they are looking at how he and 3-year-old boy were able to get into the backyard pool at the house.

Shooting during highway chase shuts I-25

One man was critically injured by gunfire and two others were treated for bullet wounds after an argument near Larimer Square moved to a car chase on Interstate 25 Sunday morning.

Cleaner Air Has Boosted Life Spans

LOS ANGELES — Cleaner air over the past two decades has added nearly five months to average life expectancy in the U.S., according to a study.
Researchers said it is the first study to show that reducing air pollution translates into longer lives.

FDA raises the bar for new diabetes drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) — New drugs to treat an epidemic of diabetes will have to be screened more closely for heart risks, federal health officials said Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration’s policy change should offer a greater assurance of safety to doctors and patients. But it will make it more costly and time-consuming for companies to develop drugs that lower blood sugars. Well over 100 such medications are in some stage of development.
