St Clair Hospital opens new emergency department

unveiled its new $13.5 million emergency department Wednesday, along with plans to change the way it admits and treats its ER patients.
Construction on the project began in October 2007, and includes a $500,000 grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, a state initiative. In addition, $487,000 from the federal Omnibus Appropriations Bill was applied to the project.

Repair work halted at Galveston hospital

GALVESTON, Texas
— Reconstruction work has been halted for the foreseeable future at Shriners Hospital for Children-Galveston, which has been closed since Hurricane Ike caused significant damage, an official with Shriners Hospitals for Children said Tuesday.
“We had a significant amount of damage and can’t afford to repair it,” Ralph Semb, president and CEO of Tampa, Fla.-based Shriners Hospitals for Children, told The Associated Press.

United way grants $700000 to agencies that aid seniors

United Way of Allegheny County today awarded $714,625 over two years to five agencies to keep senior citizens healthy and safe at home.
They are among 31 agencies that applied for the grants in the first competition that the local United Way has offered for programs to serve the elderly. Last year, United Way’s board awarded money for programs serving youngsters and young adults.

FDA Reviewing Safety Of Lilly Sepsis Drug Xigris

Eli Lilly & Co.
(LLY) drug used to treat severe sepsis after
a recent study suggested the drug could increase the risk of serious bleeding
and death.
In a so-called “early communication” posted Wednesday on the FDA’s Web site,
the agency said it was working with Lilly “to further evaluate the incidence of
serious bleeding events and mortality in patients who received Xigris.”

Veterans hospital, clinic proposed for Alameda Point

A plan to build a hospital and out-patient clinic at Alameda Point to serve local veterans is expected to be considered by leaders before the end of next month.
