QOF 'should be gender-specific'

The Men’s Health Forum was commissioned by the DoH to undertake a study into the different ways that women and men access health services.
The ‘Gender and Access to Health Services Study 2008′ found large differences in use of services and the incidence and prevalence of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, mental health and sexual health.
The study concluded that the quality framework offers the ‘ideal mechanism’ to address gender inequalities.

FDA warnings for 30 diet drugs

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned people to avoid nearly 30 weight-loss products that contain unlisted and possibly dangerous ingredients.
They may promise an easy fix to weight problems, but the FDA said they contain unlisted ingredients, including high doses of a powerful anti-obesity drug, as well as a suspected carcinogen.

Wis. Supreme Court tosses suit against Medtronic

MADISON, Wis.
– Patients cannot sue the makers of potentially unsafe medical devices approved for sale by federal regulators, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.
The court ruled against a Wisconsin man who had surgery to remove a defibrillator after the manufacturer, Medtronic, Inc., warned its battery had a chance of failing. The ruling is a victory for Minneapolis-based Medtronic and other manufacturers who want to limit product liability.

4-year-old girl killed in washing machine

The girl has been identified as Kayley Ishii.
A 4-year-old girl was killed when she became trapped inside a washing machine, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said today.
The child apparently climbed into a front-loading washing machine Monday afternoon at her home in Mission Viejo, said sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.
