Diet can help you lower cholesterol level

Dear Savvy Senior: Are there certain kinds of foods a person can eat to help lower cholesterol?
What you eat can play a huge role in lowering your cholesterol, and – for many – it may even eliminate the need for medication.
As you may already know, your cholesterol level is the amount of fat in your blood. If it’s too high, you’re at a greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Ideally, you want your total cholesterol Read the rest of this entry »

A low-cholesterol diet leaves a bitter taste in the gut

One role for the proteins on the tongue that sense bitter tasting substances, type 2 taste receptors (T2Rs), is to limit ingestion of these substances, as a large number of natural bitter compounds are known to be toxic. Two-egg diet cracks cholesterol issue

A research team from the University of Surrey headed by Professor Bruce Griffin fed two eggs per day to overweight but otherwise healthy volunteers for 12 weeks while they simultaneously followed a reduced calorie diet prescribed by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) – who normally restrict egg intake to 3-4 per week. A control group followed the same BHF diet but cut out eggs altogether.
Both groups lost between 3 to 4kg (7- 9lbs) in weight Read the rest of this entry »

Cholesterol Drugs May Cut Heart Attack Risk in Half

A new study suggests that cholesterol drugs could help cut the risk of heart attack in half. The research found that statin drugs can save lives – even of people who aren't at high risk. The drugs can help people who have normal levels of cholesterol, but high levels of something called C-reactive protein causes inflammation which could lead to heart attack or a stroke. The study suggests statins reduce both cholesterol and inflammation.
