TEXAS CITY At least 20 people died in Galveston and Brazoria Counties during Hurricane Ike and its aftermath. At least two of those deaths appear to be drownings.
Autopsies on those people were beginning Wednesday morning now that the medical examiners office in Texas City has power.
One drowning death occurred at the Sandpiper Motel, medical examiners office spokesman John Florence said.

The Denver medical examiner has identified the driver who died when his Chevy Impala crashed through a fence and into a shed on South Quebec Street on Thursday.
Carlos Duran, 26, of Denver, died of multiple blunt force injuries, the medical examiner’s office said.
The crash was at least the fourth to hit the home or property of the Zachmans in the 2700 block of South Quebec Street.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office has identified a 62-year-old Los Altos man as the victim of a fatal motorcycle collision Friday morning on eastbound state Highway 237 in Mountain View.
Bruce Mackenzie was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson that rear-ended a lawn maintenance truck carrying fertilizer and then burst into flames just east of southbound state Highway 85, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Looking to speed up the law enforcement investigative process and be able to let a family know the cause of death in a more efficient time frame, Wharton County Commissioners approved switching its interlocal agreement for medical examiner service from Galveston to Travis County.

Authorities yesterday were still awaiting autopsy results on 17-year-old Taylor Meyer, of Plainville, whose body was found Monday morning in a swampy area near the former Norfolk Airport in Norfolk.
An autopsy won’t be done until today, said Norfolk County District Attorney spokesman David Traub.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — The medical examiner in St. Johns County has ruled the death of Melissa Lightsey a homicide.
In a statement released from his office, the medical examiner says the death was “not due to saltwater drowning. The cause of death was due to trauma to the head, face, and neck.”
The ME also says injuries caused by a boat happened after Lightsey’s death.
