SUNDAY, Nov. 9 (HealthDay News) — Hospitalization rates for heart failure among older Americans have increased dramatically in the past three decades, an epidemic that represents a mounting burden on the health-care system, a new study has found.
In 2006, an estimated 807,082 men and women over 65 were hospitalized for heart failure, up from 348,866 in 1980 — a 131 percent increase.

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles County officials and a hospital are investigating why the medical center lost power when a wind-whipped wildfire roared through the campus.
The outage on Saturday forced staffers at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center to use hand-powered ventilators to help keep critical patients alive.

The hospital lost power at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, and the backup generator soon kicked in. The generator is designed to work as a bridge until the self-contained power plant, about 100 yards from the hospital’s eastern edge, fires up. The generator did its job, but the power plant didn’t — a fuel pump failed.
