Govt pushes electronic family tree for good health

WASHINGTON (AP) — It happens all the time: Filling out that clipboard at the doctor’s office, you can’t remember what cancer killed Aunt Sally or when Dad had his heart attack.
A good family health history is far more important than a gene test in predicting your future medical needs, but it’s hugely underused. On Tuesday, the government begins offering a free new service to try to change that — helping people compile one at home, Read the rest of this entry »

Mathieson not a good look for an ambassador

OF all the men in Australia that Health Minister Nicola Roxon could have chosen to appoint as an ambassador for men’s health, she chose Tim Mathieson.
Mr Mathieson is a hairdresser with an interest in men’s health; he has even been sporting a moustache for Movember, the fundraising event for men’s health.
So at face value perhaps not an unsuitable appointment, but the problem is Mr Mathieson just happens to be the partner of Deputy Prime Minister Read the rest of this entry »

“Women can be encouraged by the fact that these vitamins seem to do no harm, but they also seem to confer no benefit,” said study co-author Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, a professor of epidemiology and population Read the rest of this entry »

Good judgment: Mental health court makes sense

This month, Harris County’s criminal district judges voted to create a felony mental health court, the first one in the county’s history to focus exclusively on felony defendants diagnosed with such serious conditions as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression.
This is a smart move on several levels. Introduced about a decade ago, mental health courts, which now number more than 150 nationwide, seek to provide more humane Read the rest of this entry »
