Bisphenol A, chemical used to make plastic, lingers in body, study

A study being released today finds that bisphenol A, a chemical widely used to make plastic and suspected of causing cancer, stays in the body much longer than previously thought.
The findings are significant because the longer the chemical lingers in the body, the greater chance it has of doing harm, scientists say.
Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York also say the chemical may get into the body from sources such as plastic Read the rest of this entry »

China’s Drought May Make Birds More Susceptible to Avian Flu

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) — A drought in northern China that has

making birds more susceptible to the deadly H5N1 avian-flu strain.
The lack of rainfall in Shandong, Shaanxi and other northern

Northern Lights students make fitness a game

It happens every Wednesday at Northern Lights School. Students trickle into the gymnasium, shuck their coats and line up.
“Phew, I got here in time,” said Hudson Ojeda as he hustled to the line Dec. 10. The first grader stood poised until the first beep. Once it sounded, he and about 50 other students shot across the gym, turned around and waited for the next beep.
Older students ran slowly at first, while first graders raced full-throttle, Read the rest of this entry »

Family stress may make kids fat: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Living in a stressful household may raise a child’s risk of becoming obese, according to findings from a study of Swedish families.
Compared with 5- to 6-year-old children living in families with low stress levels, age-matched children from “high-stress” families had about twice the risk for obesity, the study team found.
“Families can probably deal with some stress or stressors, but not with several at the same time,” Read the rest of this entry »

McCain Taxing of Health Insurance Premiums Did Make Sense

The first time I heard the Presidential nominee say that he wanted the employer portion of the premiums paid toward an employee’s health insurance to be declared as income, I thought it was a stupid idea. Let me give you an example. Assume you make $50,000 and the employer’s portion of the health insurance towards your family health insurance plan was $10,000. You would receive a W-2 of $60,000. Immediately people, including myself, objected to this Read the rest of this entry »

ABERDEEN: Firefighters make fitness a priority

Aberdeen Firefighter Joe Reiter has a bit of advice for those who want to start a fitness routine.
“You don’t have to be an Olympic athletic. You just have to start somewhere,” Reiter said. “Rome wasn’t built in a day. They just went out and got started.”
While the advice is important to everyone, it likely hits home with firefighters, who face several health risks relating to the job.
According to a Harvard student published last year, firefighters Read the rest of this entry »
