this morning by a car explosion outside his house, police said.
Officials from the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tell ABC News that the explosion was caused by some sort of “explosive device” planted in Dr. Trent Pierce’s white Lexus.
Pierce, a family physician, was taken to Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., where he was listed in critical condition.

Baseball player Alex Rodriguez finally came clean Monday, admitting he took performance-enhancing drugs from 2001-2003 while he played with the Texas Rangers.
The admission follows a Sports Illustrated report that Rodriguez was one of 104 players who tested positive for such drugs in a 2003 survey.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.—Medical marijuana dispensaries will now be allowed to operate legally in Palm Springs.
The City Council voted 3-1 on Wednesday to permit two pot cooperatives. Palm Springs is the first city in Riverside County to allow medical marijuana dispensaries.
The ordinance means some of the estimated seven dispensaries now operating illegally in the city must close down.

Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz, the heir to the Saudi throne, has flown to New York for medical tests, according to the Saudi press agency.
There are no details about the prince’s condition.
Prince Sultan, who is in his eighties, has spent the last six weeks recuperating in Morocco after having medical tests in the US last year.

.- Monsignor William Smith, a leading Catholic medical ethicist, died on Saturday at a hospital in Yonkers, New York. He was 69.
