Virginia Police Hunt Suspect Who Shot Officer, Neighbors

DRAPER, Va. —  Authorities searched in two Virginia counties Tuesday for a man suspected of shooting two neighbors — one fatally — and a sheriff’s deputy.
A woman also was injured when she apparently jumped from the second story of a house to escape a fire that authorities believe was connected to the shootings.

Reserve Daleville police patrolman Neil Dowd remained in fair condition at Ball Memorial Hospital on Sunday, after having been injured in a Friday night collision.

Health Officer Frances B. Phillips has accepted a state position, leaving behind the county job she held for the past 15 years.
Starting in December, Mrs. Phillips, 57, will be the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s deputy secretary of public health services. This new job will allow her to oversee statewide efforts in AIDS, family health and other initiatives. The job pays $143,270.

— The city police youth aid detective suspended over the weekend is being investigated for possible prescription drug abuse, sources confirmed Monday.
Sherri Barnes, on the force since at least the mid-1990s, is suspected of illegally obtaining the prescription drugs for personal use.

A man accused of entering the United States illegally in 1998 was arraigned at his bedside in Bellevue Hospital Thursday on charges of shooting two police officers and firing shots at a third before being shot himself.

Around 3:45 p.m. today, police scanners reported that a female Rochester police officer was shot in the area of Dayton and Fairbanks streets, near Hudson Avenue, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. Other police officers and emergency responders then responded to the crime scene.
