There is no reason why South Africa’s dysfunctional health system cannot be turned around within five years, according to new Health Minister Barbara Hogan.
“I was fortunate to oversee the transformation of the SA Revenue Service (Sars) from parliament and it was a joke in those days. They didn’t even have ribbons to print the tax returns,” said Hogan speaking frankly in her first media interview since being appointed 20 days ago.

Two Ohio health organizations are teaming up to help people fight obesity by changing their lives for the better and the healthier.
Christ Hospital in Cincinnati is partnering with the Center for Closing the Health Gap.
The hospital pledged $1 million to the center to support initiatives and research.
It’s all part of the “Do Right Campaign” to teach people to take charge of their lives.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials Thursday pledged a new, open process for approving drugs and foods from genetically engineered animals.
Consumer groups complained the policy won’t do enough to tell people if they’re eating gene-altered animals and fails to protect the environment. They urged the incoming Obama administration to reconsider it.
