FORT WAYNE, Indiana (AFP) — For many among the growing ranks of unemployed workers in the United States, the scariest part of losing their job is losing their health insurance.
Even before the current economic crisis, 45 million Americans were uninsured. That number is expected to rise to 54 million by 2019 if changes aren’t made to the system, according to the director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – A national men’s magazine has named St. Paul the No. 2 place in American for men, while a women’s magazine ranks Minneapolis No. 6 overall for women.
Men’s Health magazine ranked 100 cities based on 38 factors, including cancer rates, air quality and the number of gym memberships.
It ranked St. Paul 12th in fitness and 13th in quality of life for men, and 2nd overall. Minneapolis was No. 9 in health and 10th overall.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A national magazine has named Madison the No. 1 place in American for men, while a second magazine names the city No. 8 in the U.S. for women.
Men's Health magazine ranked cities based on 38 factors, including cancer rates, air quality and the number of gym memberships. It ranked Wisconsin's capital No. 1 overall, and No. 7 for best quality of life for men.

Men's Fitness ranks Milwaukee as 11th fittest in the nation

The Brew City’s reputation for girth takes a beating in the latest issue of Men’s Fitness Magazine, which
as the nation’s 11th Fittest, not Fattest city.
Our fine neighbors to the south scored number 13, in the fattest category. Perhaps Chicagoans can study the motivation of Milwaukeeans, which earned an A grade in the magazine report card.

Proposed UC-Merced medical school aims to boost ranks of rural doctors

State Lt. Governor John Garamendi is proposing an ambitious fast-track medical school at University of California-Merced in an effort to create more doctors for the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most physician-poor regions in the state.
In a combined college/MD program, entering freshmen could shave up to three years off the time it takes to become a doctor. The cost would be only slightly higher than that of attending a traditional UC, said Garamendi.

Maryland ranks last in disaster preparedness

BALTIMORE (AP) — A new study finds Maryland tied for last among states nationwide in readiness for a health emergency.
Maryland scored a five out of 10 possible points on indicators for health emergency preparedness capabilities according to the study released Tuesday by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Report: NM ranks worst for employer health plans

New Mexico ranked worst in the country for the percentage of residents who are covered by health insurance through their employers, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute.
