Imagine two groups of friends having a drink in the pub on a Friday night. One is a group of women, the other men. Among all the usual chat about The X Factor and the credit crunch, the subject of weight and dieting comes up. The women talk about how much weight they’ve lost and the diets they’ve tried. The men, on the other hand, slap each other’s beer bellies and, with much laughter, joke about how many lagers it’s taken to create them.

Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain are promising voters tax cuts, new programs and other goodies.
But, as often happens in public debates, there is a little-discussed back story to many of the issues. And, as usual, that back story goes deeper than the 20-second sound bites heard in attack ads.
Take Sen. McCain’s health care proposal that would essentially wipe out the tax exemption for employer-based insurance benefits.
Sen. Obama’s campaign Read the rest of this entry »
Baptista joined Roma in the summer from Madrid, and after a tricky start he now appears to be finding his best form.
The Brazilian, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, was decisive in midweek as he came off the bench to score twice in Roma’s 3-1 Champions League win at Bordeaux.
“He is a great athlete, a force of nature,” Real Madrid’s head fitness coach Di Salvo told the Corriere dello Sport.
“In particular, he has two very strong legs that Read the rest of this entry »
Re “Necessary Medicine?” (Week in Review, Dec. 14):
The problem with President-elect Barack Obama’s supposed emphasis on the costs of health care is that his proposals fail to deal with the biggest source of wasteful expenditures, our dependence upon private health insurance.
Mr. Obama’s plans, by continuing to embrace a role for private health insurance in our system, wed us to the waste, profiteering and venality of an Read the rest of this entry »

The recent letter from a Beverly resident about a delay he encountered in the emergency room at one of the local hospitals, was interesting.
He highlighted one of the root causes of ER delay without realizing it: His private doctor could not see him, so he went to the ER for his problem. He did not get into details, appropriately so.
People should understand the ER is not a substitute for a primary care MD visit Read the rest of this entry »
Now that the magical glow of Halloween is over, and in its wake you

snow, wind, Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas feast and New Years
debauchery.
So what does this all mean for you? Well for millions of Americans,
it definitely means Read the rest of this entry »
I recall looking at General Hospital with awe when I started my internship there almost 20 years ago. As you walk through the main entrance, you look up and see the artwork on the domed ceiling depicting some of the greatest physicians throughout history, almost a medical version of the Sistine Chapel. There are parallel lines running throughout the main floor, each one painted in a different color or pattern, providing directions to each part of Read the rest of this entry »
Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) – If you have Child Health Plus or Family Health Plus insurance coverage through AmeriChoice, you’ll be getting a letter in the next few days letting you know, as of March 1, you can no longer use St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
AmeriChoice says they need to realign where they’re covering care in central New York, and St. Joseph’s contract was up — so they’ve decided to drop them from their list of approved hospitals. Read the rest of this entry »
This is the first in a series examining how the candidates’ health care proposals will affect ordinary people and how the press could cover that angle.
So far, mainstream media coverage of health care during the campaign has been characterized by stenographic reporting — simply transcribing what the candidates say, buzz words and all. Blogosphere coverage has trended the opposite direction — way too much wonk talk, angels dancing on the head of Read the rest of this entry »
President Obama’s signing of the $797 billion stimulus bill will hopefully help lift the economy, but for many small business owners the measure was a mere sideshow to a much more important debate looming on Capitol Hill.
In survey after survey, small business owners have said that health care is their chief concern, exceeding even taxes and the credit crisis. During the presidential campaign, health care was also a key issue, and Obama vowed Read the rest of this entry »
