Doctor shuts door on new Medicare patients

WATSONVILLE – For the greater part of 2008, Dr. Chris O’Grady closed his doors to new Medicare patients.
He was already caring for so many elderly patients in his Watsonville-based family practice that he was often going home at 10 p.m.
Medicare paid him far less than he considered fair – and now the government was threatening to cut the rates again.
Many of the county’s primary care doctors have struggled before reaching the same conclusion.

Shooting during highway chase shuts I-25

One man was critically injured by gunfire and two others were treated for bullet wounds after an argument near Larimer Square moved to a car chase on Interstate 25 Sunday morning.

Southwest Atlanta Hospital shuts down … again

A historic Atlanta hospital, citing the credit crunch, announced Friday that it would close, the third time it has shut down in the past four years.
Southwest Atlanta Hospital had already shuttered its emergency room and had been operating only an urgent-care center since the fall. The closing was scheduled for Friday evening.

Peanut company shuts Texas plant in salmonella scare

WASHINGTON — A second peanut processing plant owned by the company at the heart of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella illness has been shut down after the bacteria were discovered in peanut products there.

Vomiting bug shuts hospital wards

Four hospital wards in Hull have been shut because of an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.
Wards 8, 80 and 100 at Hull Royal Infirmary and ward 1 at the city’s Castle Hill hospital are affected.
Managers at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust urged people who have had diarrhoea or vomiting to stay away from hospital.
Consultant microbiologist Dr Rolf Meigh said spreading the Norovirus infection could cause “significant disruption”.

Major crash briefly shuts down Interstate 680 in Danville

A Sig-alert has been canceled and all lanes of Interstate Highway 680 in Danville have been cleared following a major-injury crash earlier today that involved at least three vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash, which happened shortly after noon on southbound I-680 just south of Greenbrook Drive, appears to have involved a tow truck, a flatbed truck, a car and possibly a fourth vehicle, according to initial reports.

FDA shuts down Good Flow Juice Co.
Keeping it fresh has forced one Austin juice company to shut down, at least for now.
The Food and Drug Administration would not grant Good Flow Juice Co. an exemption from pasteurization requirements.
