Lowly worm offers new clues on stroke, heart drugs

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Worms that can survive with almost no oxygen are teaching scientists how to rescue oxygen-starved cells in humans who suffer a heart attack or stroke, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
They identified a gene that can help a cell slow down when oxygen levels get too low, protecting the cells from making fatal mistakes while starved of oxygen.

Women ignorant of stroke risk

Most women are ignorant of small lifestyle changes that would “”dramatically reduce”" the risk of strokes, the Stroke Association says.
The charity has survey evidence that shows 60% of women do not remember their last blood pressure reading.
Two-thirds do not know what an optimal blood pressure reading should be.
Stroke is the most common cause of long-term disability, it says.
Women are twice as likely to die from it as men, it added.

Blacks at Higher Risk for Brain Lesions Causing Stroke

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 8 (HealthDay News) — Blacks are more likely than whites to have small bleeds within the brain, increasing their chances of having a stroke, according to a new study.
Compared with whites, blacks had 32 percent more of these lesions, called cerebral microbleeds, which are tied to increased odds of having a stroke. Blacks were also more likely to have them in several different areas of the brain.

Obese kids have greater risk of heart attack, stroke: Study

A study of 70 boys and girls found obese children and teens with abnormal cholesterol had thicker carotid arteries, the arteries in the neck that supply blood to the heart and brain.
The neck arteries in the obese children, aged 13 on average, “are looking like those of a 45-year-old,” says Dr. Geetha Raghuveer, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine, and cardiologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
