I had no patience for low-impact anything until a complicated operation last May involved the breaking of my foot. The doctor told me I should not dance, run or jump for a year. “No impact,” he insisted, and advised me to ride a recumbent bike instead.
I tried the bike to nowhere. It was boring.
A Jazzercise flier announcing, “Lite” classes caught my eye. Could this rehabilitating baby boomer get a more kinetic workout without pounding the feet? Read the rest of this entry »
The report last week that the U.S. economy lost nearly 2 million jobs this year, and 533,000 jobs in November alone, sent shudders through our nation’s households. That’s the biggest one-month plunge in jobs in 34 years. “Horrendous” was how one economist put it, while others said the number of unemployed, and underemployed, could easily double over the next year.
These job losses spell disaster for our health. Millions of Read the rest of this entry »
DALLAS — Terrell Owens is either a team-wrecker or a great teammate once you get to know him, a self-promoter or a guy who just likes to have fun, one of the greatest receivers in NFL history or a wideout who drops too many passes.
Yet when it comes to fitness, there’s no debate. He’s a freak.
Just look at the pictures on the front and back of his new book, “T.O.’s Finding Fitness,” and you’ll see muscles in places you didn’t know there Read the rest of this entry »

Yet when it comes to fitness, there’s no debate — he’s a freak.
Just look at the pictures on the front and back of his new book, “T.O.’s Finding Fitness.”
Owens is amazingly sculpted, especially for a 34-year-old in his 13th NFL season.

There is No Respect for Women’s Health, and Feelings
Millions of women give birth -one child after another. There is no respect for their health, body and feelings. For example most women give birth before the age of 18 and want only 2 or 3 births, but are not able to use family planning because of their husband’s objections. Also women do not have easy access to various types of family planning facilities. In South Asia, on one hand there is poverty, Read the rest of this entry »
Mental illness is more common than we sometimes think. One in four families is affected by mental illness.
The good news!
Most mental disorders can be treated. Common disorders such as depression are treatable. Other disorders such as schizophrenia cannot be cured but can be treated and controlled.
Many people when they find out that they (or a family member) have a mental disorder, feel ashamed. The fact is that there are more persons living Read the rest of this entry »
A hospital may not be the ideal venue for a wedding, but it is when someone you love is there.
Bob Vesperman, former high school principal in Osceola, had been volunteering at Bethesda Hospital in Saint Paul for 15 years, talking to stroke survivors after he recovered from a stroke. Last fall, he was readmitted after suffering heart failure.
His wife, Kathy Vesperman, says, “My husband had open heart surgery in September and he’s had many complications Read the rest of this entry »
